Are hospitals places for inspiration?

It’s a good question. Are hospitals good places for inspiration? Well they certainly could be, when one of my characters works in the medical field. Although I’m not sure it’s the best place for inspiration, when lying horizontal after surgery. You know, when you’re feeling kind of vulnerable, sedated, and not really on the planet. Hmm.

This past week I had surgery and am pleased to report it went well. I still have all my limbs and faculties intact and am very grateful for it. Equally, it’s an excellent sign that on Day 4 post-op, I can think about writing something here on my blog.

However, to my embarrassment I recall waking up in recovery and immediately asking the nurse what she liked about her job. “Because I’m writing a novel”. The sound of my voice (I can still hear it) sounded like I was drunk (of course). I’m fairly sure she humored me with a one-liner about “enjoying working with patients” BUT from the look on her face I reckon she was lying – or maybe it was her vibe I picked up on. Mind you, I was pretty sedated so who can tell. Why on earth did I ask the question then?

I guess it was on my mind. I’d been scribbling in my notebook (it goes everywhere with me) beforehand. I’m also reading a book on the ‘craft’ of writing, so suppose that was rattling around in my head too. Most days I gain some inspiration from my surroundings. So why did I ask the question of the nurse? Not wanting to miss an opportunity?

Sadly, the opportunity didn’t work out as predicted. She wasn’t interested in what I had to say, was clearly focused on her job, and getting ready to ship me out into the wards. She didn’t have time to engage in drugged-up chit-chat about my writing. That’s why.

Okay, I understand now. Ah, maybe I can use that for my character. Now I’m thinking!

I imagine I will lounge around on the sofa for a couple more days, getting my physical mojo back. Chocolate will soon be added back to the menu, thank god. I am relieved my brain is whirring into action, and emerging from the haze of painkillers. Something tells me it is time to get writing again!

Ka kite ano, see you again soon.
